Photography is my passion. After working in a predominantly left brain career, I took my point and shoot camera and joined some photo classes and workshops. After struggling within myself and with the help of some encouraging words from my instructors, I realized that I just couldn’t capture my subjects as my mind envisioned them. Point and shoot cameras are nice for portability…. but they just didn’t give me level of creative control I wanted.

So, with my husband’s encouragement, I bought a digital single lens reflex camera. It allowed me more control over my compositions…. to draw attention to areas in focus (depth of field), to stop or capture action, etc.

Hoping to learn more, I joined my local camera club, the Northern Virginia Photographic Society (NVPS).

With the help of friends and mentors I met at NVPS, I learned the basics. Joining the group on photographic adventures, I tried different kinds of photography. More classes and workshops with wonderful photographers who were also caring and patient leaders provided me with additional experiences and techniques. Through these, I found my love of close-up and macro photography. The abstracts I could create were particularly appealing to me for the feelings of inquiry and intrigue inherent in my photos.

AND, I learned about post processing…. tools not even on my radar. i had no awareness. Adobe Lightroom allows me to make unbelievable adjustments to photographs: enhancing, dimming or completely changing the colors, the detail or the sharpness. I use post processing to express in my photos my own personal visions or fantasies. I had so much to learn… And I continue to learn… about photography, about post-processing, about my own creativity…. and most of all about myself.

I’m loving the process of learning…. and the reactions of family and friends, both long term and new, to my photos. It has been and continues to be a fantastic journey!

Photography lets me soar to new places…. to the unknown

I Love It!
